What is an Apple iPhone

Apple iPhone, a revolutionary product from Apple, can be considered as the combination of three devices- a mobile phone with advanced features, a wide-screen iPod with touch controls and an innovative internet communication device- in one user-friendly and lightweight handled instrument.

The ‘multi-touch’ technology is the most attractive feature of this handset. The iPhone has only one physical button, called ‘home’. All the other functions can be carried out by moving the finger across its 3.5-inch touch sensitive screen. The resolution of the screen is 320X480 pixels, at 160 pixels-per-inch display.

Apple iPhone’s extra sleek feature competes with its performance. With its 0.46-inch (11.6-millimeter) thickness and 4.8-ounce (135 grams) weight, the iPhone is creating a sensation in the mobile phone market. Other notable features are the 2-megapixel camera, volume control, ring-silent switch, 3.5-millimeter headset/audio jack, SIM tray, “sleep-wake” switch, speaker, microphone, and a 30-pin iPod dock connector. At present it is enabled with GSM bands 850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, and 1900MHz and Edge phone 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 capabilities, and in future it will offer the 3G capabilities also.

The iPhone runs on Mac OS X with complete synchronization with a Mac, PC or Internet service and offers full integration with iTunes for music and videos. iPhone’s email will be compatible with HTML-capable emails that work with any IMAP or POP3 e-mail service.

The Safari web browser of Apple offers the typical browsing experience with its ability to show the standard web pages, rather than the WAP version. Satellite imagery from Google will enhance your capabilities with a new search experience. At present the iPhone is provided with Dashboard widgets, and on offer are the weather and stock widgets.

There are three smart sensors to control the behavior of the iPhone. The touch screen and the display are shut down when the phone is held to the ear, and the light sensor automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen and saves power. The accelerometer, the third sensor, lets the phone know the display mode –portrait or landscape.

Apart from the above sensors, the iPhone is provided with intelligent photo and sound management features.  The ‘pinching’ motion of iPhone allows the user to zoom in and out of pictures, and to orient pictures in standard or landscape mode. The sound management features enable it to automatically adjust sound levels up or down as calls come in.

By using the visual voice-mail, you can skip directly to the voice mail that they want to hear. The easy-to-use conference facility allows the user to connect two callers with just one touch of the screen.  iPhone text messaging gives you a real effect of ‘chat’ with the use of bubbled cases and a user-friendly keyboard with typical chat tones.

The iPhone will have two versions - a 4GB, $499 model and an 8GB, $599 model. Both of these models will be available from Apple Stores or Cingular, the exclusive U.S. carrier of Apple phones, from June 2007 onwards.

The Apple iPhone has stepped into the mobile market, showing the competence of Apple technology and throwing a tough competition to the competitors.
